otherwiseの用法

1. 「さもないと、それ以外では」＝ or else / if not（条件の逆転・脅し・警告） 

→ 前文が成り立たなければ、悪い結果が起こる。 

1 Hurry up, otherwise you’ll miss the train.  

急ぎなさい、さもないと電車に乗り遅れるよ。 

2 Wear a coat; otherwise, you’ll catch a cold. 

コートを着なさい。それ以外では風邪をひくよ。 

3 Save your work now, otherwise you might lose everything. 

今すぐ保存しなさい。さもないと全部失うかもしれない。 

4 Call me by 5 p.m., otherwise I’ll assume you’re not coming. 

午後5時までに電話しなさい。それ以外では来ないとみなすよ。 

5 Study hard, otherwise you’ll fail the exam. 

しっかり勉強しなさい。さもないと試験に落ちるよ。 

6 Lock the door, otherwise someone might break in. 

ドアに鍵をかけなさい。さもないと誰かが入り込むかもしれない。 

7 Finish your homework, otherwise no TV tonight. 

宿題を終わらせなさい。さもないと今夜はテレビ禁止。 

8 Pay the bill today, otherwise they’ll cut off the electricity. 

今日請求書を払いなさい。さもないと電気が止められる。 

9 Apologize to her, otherwise she’ll never forgive you. 

彼女に謝りなさい。さもないと絶対に許さないよ。 

10 Turn down the music, otherwise the neighbors will complain. 

音楽の音量を下げなさい。さもないと近所から苦情が来ます。

2. 「それ以外の点では」＝ in other respects / apart from that（例外を除く残り） 

→ ある点は違うが、それ以外は同じ／共通。 

11 The hotel was expensive, but otherwise perfect. 

ホテルは高かったが、それ以外の点では完璧だった。 

12 He’s lazy, but otherwise a good student. 

彼は怠け者だが、それ以外では良い生徒だ。 

13 The food was terrible, otherwise the party was fun. 

食べ物はひどかったが、それ以外ではパーティーは楽しかった。 

14 She’s very strict, but otherwise kind. 

彼女はとても厳しいが、それ以外の点では優しい。 

15 The car is old, but otherwise in good condition. 

車は古いが、それ以外では状態が良い。 

16 The movie was long, otherwise excellent. 

映画は長かったが、それ以外の点では素晴らしかった。 

17 He failed math, but otherwise passed all subjects. 

彼は数学で落ちたが、それ以外では全科目に合格した。 

18 The weather was cold, otherwise the trip was great. 

天気は寒かったが、それ以外では旅行は最高だった。 

19 The apartment is small, but otherwise comfortable. 

アパートは狭いが、それ以外の点では快適だ。
